The alleys and back streets of cities have often been the "badland" of cities. Today they are the Badlands on Steroids. With the destruction of the mental health care system in California, the reduction in health care services in general, the systemic indifference to the growing epidemic of drug and alcohol addition, the rising costs of build, rent or buy....alleys, undermaze areas, vacant land of any kind in cities all over California often becomes the domain of the homeless, the sick, the addicted.

Nowhere is this more apparent than the underpasses and lands adjacent to the freeways in Oakland, California. The photographs here are of one small area under the intersections of major highways servicing the Bay Area and California. However, this very sad circumstances pictured here are not unique...these photos could have been taken in many cities in our state.
